Observations/Finding
At the request of the client’s representative, Mike Marhatta, Ram Mogulla of AS ENGINEERING AND CONSULTING, LLC (ASEC) visited the project site to perform Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests using an automated DCP machine along the recently installed 30-inch diameter water line near bends 15 and 19. These tests were conducted in the grassed area between the existing 30-inch water line and the curb. Despite multiple attempts, the equipment encountered resistance, likely due to rock, at a depth of approximately 12 to 14 inches. No further testing was conducted that day.
Based on the testing performed on this visit, manual dynamic cone penetrometer testing conducted on March 22, 2024, and our monitoring during the placement of the water main in this area, we believe the encountered material to be rock. We also believe this rock bottom should be capable of supporting the thrust block with an allowable bearing pressure upwards of 4,300 pounds per square foot at both bend locations.
