Observations/Finding

At the request of the client’s representative, our AS ENGINEERING AND CONSULTING, LLC (ASEC) representative visited the job site to observe the contractor’s work activities from a quality standpoint to verify compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals and conducted QC testing per the project drawings and specifications.  The following observations were made on site this shift:

Summary: Utilizing a Caterpillar DK6, CP54B sheepsfoot ride-on vibratory compactor, and a D250E off-road tandem dump truck, an approximate 12-inch lift was placed and compacted in an area spanning approximately 74 feet x 150 feet (Lots #9, 10, and 11) at a depth of -3 feet below the surface. Compaction testing was conducted using a Troxler 3430 (Serial #30942) with a moisture-density relationship of 94.8 pcf Dry Density and 25% Moisture.

Compaction Testing Results: Upon receiving testing results:

  • Test #1 recorded a Dry Density of 103.0 pcf and Moisture content of 18.2%.
  • Test #2 yielded a Dry Density of 100.0 pcf and Moisture content of 20.3%. It was determined that natural rock was mixed into the soil testing area, potentially affecting the test results.

Proof Roll: A proof-roll was conducted using a loaded Tandem off-road dump truck, and Lots #9, 10, and 11 were observed to not display severe rutting/pumping at approximately -3 feet from the surface.

Infrastructure Installation:

  • Storm drain manhole A9 was placed without stone bedding.
  • Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) was installed, connecting from B1 to B2, with no stone bedding utilized.
  • Using a 3.8-inch probe rod, the deflection depth was approximately 1/2 an inch.
  • Manhole B2 was placed without stone bedding.

Conclusion: The compaction and infrastructure installation activities were successfully completed, with compaction levels meeting acceptable standards despite the presence of natural rock in the soil.
