Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
Upon arrival at the Sterlington future Drive cul-de-sac area, it was observed that soil was being removed from Sterlington Drive and deposited between Sta 9+00 to Sta 9+50, which constitutes the future cul-de-sac area (refer to attached photos). Excavators, a dozer, off-road dump trucks, and a ride-on vibratory sheeps-foot compactor were all utilized in the soil removal process. All lifts were approximately 12 inches in depth, although previous lifts were not observed.
To test for compaction, a Troxler 3430 (serial#30942) was used, with an optimum density-moisture ratio (proctor) determined (from a previously obtained sample) to be 94.8 dry density (DD) and 25% moisture (M).
The following are the compaction testing results:
- At 9+50 (just north of crossing):
- Test #1:
- DD: 95
- M: 19.7% (pass)
- Test #2:
- DD: 96.1
- M: 19.6% (pass)
- Test #1:
- Next location just south of crossing (9+00):
- Test #1:
- DD: 86.7
- M: 19.2% (fail)
- Recommended additional compactive effort
- Retest #1:
- DD: 88.8
- M: 26.1% (fail)
- Recommended additional compactive effort
- Retest #2:
- DD: 96.0
- M: 17.3% (pass)
- Test #1:
- Next lift just north of crossing (9+50):
- Test #1:
- DD: 85.9
- M: 20.0% (fail)
- Recommended additional compactive effort
- Retest #1:
- DD: 91.1
- M: 20.5% (fail)
- Recommended additional compactive effort
- Test #1:
- New location at crossing (9+25) (-2 feet from surface):
- Test #1:
- DD: 83.8
- M: 18.4% (fail)
- Recommended additional compactive effort
- Retest #1:
- DD: 91.0
- M: 16.5% (pass)
- Test #1:
All test results were discussed with the site foreman. No further observations or testing were completed on this day.
Attached to this report are photos documenting the soil removal process, compaction testing, and relevant locations.
