Observations/Finding
Summary
*
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day. Overview: Excavation and storm drainpipe placement activities were continued between BA1 and BA2. Several challenges were encountered during the process, including the presence of rock, issues with compaction, and water intrusion at specific locations. Sanitation sewer placement between 4.2 and 4.3. Findings and Actions Taken:

Rock Encounter:

Rock was encountered at a depth of 60 to 80 feet from the headwall.

An approximate 4-foot lift was placed and compacted around the storm drainpipe, extending 20 to 30 feet from the headwall.

Compaction Evaluation:

A surface penetration test using a 3/8 inch probe indicated a penetration of approximately 5 inches.

Troxler radiation testing could not be completed due to proximity to the metal storm drainpipe.

It was recommended to the foreman to remove the 4-foot lift and replace it with 6-inch lifts to ensure proper compaction. However, this recommendation was disregarded, and the next lift was initiated.

Rock Obstruction and Sanitation Pipe Placement:

The placement of the sanitation pipe was impeded by rock between depths 4.2 to 4.3.

Despite previous blasting, the rock remained intact, requiring approximately 5 hours of work using a Hoe-hammer.

Lifts between depths 4.2 and 4.3 were approximately 3 to 4 feet in thickness.

Testing in this area was not feasible due to safety concerns within the trench.

Water Intrusion and Stabilization:

Water intrusion occurred at manhole 4.3, necessitating the use of approximately 2 feet x 6 feet x 6 feet of 57 stone to stabilize the area for manhole placement.

It was recommended to the foreman to remove water at 4.3 using a pump. However, the foreman stated that the intrusion could not be entirely stopped.

Recommendations:

Compaction Procedures:

Strict adherence to compaction procedures, including utilizing smaller lifts for better compaction results, should be observed to maintain structural integrity.

Rock Handling:

Further evaluation of rock conditions and consideration of alternative methods for rock removal or mitigation should be undertaken to expedite progress and minimize disruptions.

Water Management:

Continued monitoring and management of water intrusion are essential to prevent delays and ensure worksite safety.

Conclusion: The excavation and storm drainpipe placement activities faced various challenges, including rock obstructions, compaction issues, and water intrusion. Effective coordination and proactive measures are crucial to address these challenges and ensure the timely completion of the project while maintaining safety and quality standards.
