Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Summary of Testing:

Nuclear density testing using a Troxler 3430 gauge (Serial #30942) was performed on the Graded Aggregate Base (GAB) of the future roadway. The testing aimed to determine the compaction and moisture content of the GAB to verify they met the required job specifications.

Initial Testing Results:

  • Number of Tests Conducted: 3
  • Results: All three initial tests conducted were found to not meet job specifications for compaction.

Corrective Actions:

During a subsequent meeting with onsite personnel, it was determined that additional moisture and recompaction were necessary to meet the job specified compaction requirements. The following corrective actions were implemented:

  1. Watering: Additional water was applied to the GAB using a water truck to achieve the desired moisture content.
  2. Recompaction: The GAB was recompacted using a smooth drum ride-on vibratory roller.

(See attached photo for equipment used in the recompaction process.)

Follow-Up Testing:

  • Number of Additional Tests Conducted: 10
  • Results: All ten additional tests conducted after the corrective actions were completed were found to meet job specifications for compaction.

Please refer to the attached testing report for detailed results of all tests conducted.
