Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Introduction:

This report details observations made upon arrival at the site, including the removal of a corrugated metal pipe at manhole AI4, water flooding in the trench due to rain events, pumping efforts by the grading company, and an observation regarding a reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) between AI6 and AI5.

Site Observations:

  • Corrugated Metal Pipe Removal: Upon arrival, it was noted that one piece of 48-inch corrugated metal pipe was being removed at manhole AI4. The trench was open, and multiple rain events had occurred, resulting in water flooding the trench and causing movement of the corrugated pipe.
  • Pumping Efforts: The grading company was actively engaged in pumping out the water from the trench using one 3-inch pump and one 2-inch pump. Efforts were underway to mitigate the water accumulation and facilitate the backfilling process.
  • Observation of RCP: An observation was made regarding a reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) with a steep slope between AI6 (pre-existing) and AI5. Upon discussion with the foreman, it was told to us that the steep slope was necessary to meet elevation requirements as per project specifications.
  • Site Conditions: It was noted that the entire site was excessively wet, making it impractical to perform any additional work at the time of observation.

Conclusion:

The site observations revealed challenges associated with the removal of a corrugated metal pipe, water flooding in the trench, and the presence of a steep-sloped reinforced concrete pipe to meet elevation requirements. Efforts were underway to mitigate water accumulation through pumping activities. Due to the prevailing wet conditions, further work on the site was postponed.

No further observations or assessments were conducted during the visit.
