Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
Meeting with Site Foreman: A meeting was convened with the site foreman to address concerns regarding soil placement on various lots, including 037-03-040-03, following a rain event the previous day. Despite warnings from the soil technician regarding high soil moisture levels compromising compaction, fill placement proceeded by the contractor.
Observations and Actions Taken:
- Unusual Equipment Movement:
- Unusual movement of equipment was noted during observation, indicating potential issues with soil compaction.
- A recommendation was made to the site foreman to scarify the soil on affected lots to address high moisture contents.
- Scarification Process:
- A Komatsu P61 was employed to scarify and aerate the wet soils at the affected locations.
- Continued Excavation:
- Excavation activities persisted between BA1-BA2 for the storm drain.
- Water intrusion was encountered in the trench, as depicted in the attached photo.
- Storm Drain Stabilization:
- Approximately 2-3 feet of #57 stone bedding was utilized to stabilize the 48-inch metal corrugated pipe placed in the trench..
- Sanitation Sewer Issues:
- Water intrusion issues were also encountered in the sanitation sewer between depths 4.3 to 4.4.
- Varying depths of 57 stone bedding were employed to stabilize the pipe in affected areas.
- Some rock remained intact after blasting, requiring 1.5 hours of Hoe-hammer work for removal.
Recommendations and Next Steps:
- Monitoring and Inspection:
- Continuous monitoring and inspection of soil compaction levels and drainage conditions are imperative to ensure project integrity and safety.
- Mitigation Measures:
- Implementing scarification and appropriate bedding materials to address compaction and stabilization concerns should be prioritized.
- Further Evaluation:
- Further evaluation of water intrusion sources and potential drainage solutions is warranted to prevent future issues.
