Observations/Finding

Our ASEC representative was on site as requested by the Client and Contractor to observe soil placement within the dam keyway and conduct compaction tests as needed to ensure quality and control of work. Visual observation techniques were employed to evaluate work in-place for
general compliance with the Project Plans, Specifications, Codes and Standards, and Material Submittals.

Friday 10/14:

  • CGU contractors were on the job site. CGU contractors excavated soil from Zone 2, shown on attached Image 1. Soils were classified on-site as red, sandy silt with some clay.
  • Soil remediation was needed in the keyway. Gray, very micaceous silts were removed and replaced with the red sandy silts with clay. The remediation area is outlined in red on Image 2.  Up to 3 to 4  feet of soil was removed.
  • Gray, white silty medium to coarse sands with some rock fragments were encountered at lower depths. Water began to trickle in at 4 feet and was removed before placing additional fill soils.
  • Soils were placed in 6-inch lifts and compacted.  Compaction tests are attached.
  • Soft soils were encountered in the area where the temporary pipe was installed. Recommendations were given to compact these soils using a large compactor. A density test was taken and met job specifications for soil density. The test location is noted with a white dot on Image 2.

Monday 10/17:

  • CGU contractors excavated soils from Zone 1 (outlined in red in Image 1). Soil consistency was a red sandy silt with clay and a few roots.
  • Recommendations were given to the contractor to remove all organics from the soils before placing them in the dam.
  • The soil was visually inspected, and contractors removed the roots from the soil before placing them as fill.
  • Soils were placed in 6-inch lifts and compacted with a CAT 563 compactor.
  • Tests were taken within the fill area and found to meet job specifications.  The fill area is noted in red, and the test locations are noted in white on Image 3.
