Observations/Finding
The site was visited by the undersigned AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to assure compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were made on site today.
Arrived at the jobsite to observe soil placement on the dam. Upon Arrival I had a discussion with the contractor and we both came to an agreement that the soils used for fill placement today were found to be too wet. These soils need to be scarified and aerated prior to placement and compaction.
After that discussion we than moved on to the next assignment for today which was completing several driveway lifts. The contractor spent one hour removing standing water. Once the excess water was removed and surficial soft soils removed, fill placement commenced. The contractor utilized a Bomag RR 05. Once compaction was completed, the area was probed, and found to exhibit soft areas. Nuclear density testing was performed, using a Troxler Gauge Model #3430, Serial #38069. Results of testing are attached. After discussion with Ram Mogulla P.E. of ASEC, it was decided that the soil moisture content was too high, resulting in failing compaction tests. Further testing was found to yield the same results (soil moisture content too high). We recommended to the contractor to open the area up, scarify and allow to aerate before recompaction and resting.
